Explainer – 7 – Golgi Apparatus (The Post Office of the CELL)

Just as in real life, there is a post office that sorts, and transfers all the documents and letters, similarly cell also needs a post office to sort and transfer the lipids and proteins and this post office is the Golgi Apparatus.

Golgi Apparatus was discovered by Camillo Golgi. He documented it in a cell of an owl. He did staining tests and found this thread like structure as at that time the microscopes were not that good but after some time the electron microscope helped us see the diagram and structure of Golgi Apparatus.

It looks like stacks of flattened sac like structures.

It modifies, sorts and packages proteins and lipids into vesicles for transport, secretion or lysosome formation.

In the next explainer we will learn about the suicide bags of a cell, lysosomes
