Explainer 14 – Average Speed and Average Velocity

Average speed

The average speed is the total distance covered by an object divided by the time taken to cover that distance

total distance travelled/total time interval

For example if i cover 200 km in 2 hrs then my avg speed = 200/2 = 100km/hr

Uniform and non uniform motion

If an object cover equal distances in equal intervals of time, it is said to be in uniform motion but if an object cover unequal distances in equal or unequal intervals of time, it is said to be in non – uniform motion.

Average velocity

The average velocity is the change in position divided by the time taken to change the position

change in position/time taken = displacement/time taken

For example if i cover 200 km in 2 hrs then my avg velocity = 200/2 = 100km/hr

If it is given that it has gone 200km in 2hrs and came back 200 km in 3 hrs then the avg velocity = 0/4 = 0km/hr

SI unit of both average velocity and average speed is m/s.

And another topic arises from velocity which is average acceleration or acceleration.

Acceleration (a) = change in velocity/time

a = v – u/t (Where v is the final velocity and u is the initial velocity)

SI unit of acceleration is m/s^2

If my initial velocity (u) = 0m/s

My final velocity (v) = 60m/s

And time taken to attain this velocity = 6 s

Acceleration (a) = v-u/t

a = 60-0/6

a = 6m/s^2

Therefore we can conclude that :-

Average speed – total distance travelled/Time taken, SI unit – m/s

Average velocity – change in position/time taken, SI unit – m/s

Average acceleration – v-u/t, SI unit – m/s^2
